Why do AI employees need a place to work?

Because an AI employee can only do real work where the business's records, rules and approvals already live. Without that place, every agent needs its own connections, nobody sees what it did, and nothing stops it acting alone. AI agents can already do the work

Agents like Claude Code and Codex can read a customer's history, draft a reply, sort a queue of requests and prepare a report. The ability is not the problem any more.

The problem is where they do it. In most businesses an agent works in a chat window. A person copies the context in, copies the answer back out, and pastes it into whichever app it belongs in. The person is the integration. The agent forgets everything when the window closes, and there is no record of what it did.

What does an AI employee actually need?

The same things a new hire needs on their first day:

• The records. The customer history, the inbox, the open jobs: the context the work depends on.
• Tools it can use. A way to look things up and to propose an action, not just talk about one.
• A queue of work. Jobs it can pick up, each done once and not twice.
• Rules. What it may do on its own, and a limit on what it may spend.
• A manager. A person who approves what goes out to a customer.
• A record. What happened, so anyone can see it the next morning.

A chat window has none of these. A pile of separate apps has all of them, scattered across a dozen logins that each have their own rules.

Why connecting an agent to every app doesn't solve it

The obvious fix is to connect the agent to each app the business already uses. Each connection carries its own credentials, its own permissions and its own idea of what the agent is allowed to do. The agent ends up with keys to everything and no single place where anyone can see what it did with them.

That is the opposite of how you would bring on a person. You would not hand a new hire a set of keys to every system and hope. You would give them a desk, the files they need, and a manager who signs off on what matters.

What a workplace for AI employees looks like
