What is answer engine optimization and how does it relate to SEO?

Learn how answer engine optimization differs from SEO and why AI search results matter for your business.

By Brian MacDonald ·

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is formatting content so AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude can find and quote your answers. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking in search results, AEO targets the AI summaries themselves. Both involve discovery by bots, but they require different approaches—and strong content serves both.

How Answer Engines Work

When you ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini a question, the AI searches the web, reads multiple sources, and creates a single answer. It cites where it pulled information from. This process is different from a traditional search engine ranking pages for you to click on.

AEO and SEO: Similar but Different

Traditional SEO aims to rank your page high in search results. Answer engine optimization aims to get your content quoted in AI-generated answers.

Both involve search bots discovering your content, but the optimization differs:

  • SEO works through site authority, backlinks, keyword relevance, and page speed.
  • AEO works through clear, direct answers to specific questions.

A page can rank well in Google Search without appearing in a ChatGPT answer, and vice versa. They overlap but are not the same.

What You Actually Need to Do

According to Google, "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." But in practice, content that works for AEO shares traits:

  1. Answer questions directly and completely. Start with a short, clear answer before explaining further.
  2. Make answers easy to extract. Structured text—numbered lists, tables, short sentences—is easier for AI to pull and quote.
  3. Allow AI crawlers access. Ensure your robots.txt permits OpenAI's crawler and other AI agents.
  4. Keep content current. Answer engines favor recent, accurate information.

Allowing AI Search Bots

OpenAI's SearchBot crawls the web to answer questions in ChatGPT. To help ensure your site appears in search results, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file and allowing requests from their published IP ranges.

Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links. Expect roughly a day for your robots.txt changes to take effect across AI systems.

Why Both Matter

SEO and AEO are not competitors; they reinforce each other. Strong SEO (authority, recency, backlinks) helps content rank in AI answers. Content optimized for AEO (clear answers, good structure) tends to rank better in traditional search too.

A content strategy that serves both—answering questions directly and thoroughly—works better than optimizing for one alone.

How Ownbox Helps

Ownbox's SEO Machine turns the questions your customers ask into answers published on your own website, so AI assistants like ChatGPT find you and send you business.

Each article it writes:

  • Opens with a short, direct answer—the kind AI systems quote.
  • Fully answers the question asked.
  • Is marked up so both traditional search engines and AI systems can read it.

Before publishing, the SEO Machine checks that nothing in the article uses words your business avoids, names of competitors, or numbers you have not approved.

It connects to Google Search Console with one button, so you see what questions customers are searching for and which answers are working.

Do I need special markup or schema to appear in AI answers?

["There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add."](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) Clean, well-structured content is enough.

What happens if I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

["Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) To opt out, modify robots.txt to block the OAI-SearchBot.

Does answer engine optimization replace SEO?

No. AEO and SEO are complementary. Content that answers questions clearly (AEO) tends to rank well in traditional search (SEO), and strong authority (SEO) helps content appear in AI answers (AEO). A single content strategy can serve both.
