How do I write useful content that AI search can find and cite?
Write content that answers your customers' questions directly, clearly and with facts AI and search engines can find and cite.

Write direct answers to questions your customers actually ask, at the start and in plain language. Format clearly with headings, lists and short paragraphs. Keep facts accurate and up to date. Search engines and AI assistants both reward content that is clear, factual and easy to parse.
How AI search finds content
AI search engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others crawl websites and return excerpts when they answer questions. The engines look for pages that directly answer what a person asked. If your page has the clearest, most accurate answer, the engine is likely to find it and cite it.
According to Google's documentation on AI Overviews, there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add. The fundamentals of clear writing apply to AI search the same way they do to traditional search.
Answer the question first
Start each article with a direct, complete answer to the question in the title. This is the paragraph AI engines typically quote. Write it in plain language, in one or two sentences, so someone reading only that paragraph gets a useful answer.
Then provide the detail: how the thing works, what the options are, where the trade-offs lie, what to look for, and what to do next. This builds trust and shows you understand the subject.
Format for clarity
Break your content into pieces:
- Use clear headings to show what each section covers
- Use lists (numbered for steps, bullets for options)
- Keep paragraphs short
- Use bold for key terms
- Put numbers, quotes and links where they belong, not mixed into sentences
This structure makes it easier for AI engines to parse and understand your content. It also makes it readable for people.
Keep facts accurate and current
If your content includes numbers, dates or claims, keep them right. If a fact changes, update the article. AI engines reward content that is factual and current.
If you quote a source or cite a number, include a link to the source in the same paragraph. This helps readers and AI engines verify the claim.
Let search engines find you
To allow ChatGPT and other AI search engines to crawl your site, check your robots.txt file. According to OpenAI's documentation, allow OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file so your site appears in search results. Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.
Similarly, allow Google's crawlers so your content appears in Google's AI features and traditional search results.
When you publish new content or update old content, you can notify search engines directly. IndexNow is intended for notifying search engines about recently added, updated, or deleted URLs, so they discover your changes faster.
One option: the SEO Machine
If you're building content at scale, the SEO Machine is one way to automate this work. It takes questions your customers actually ask and writes articles that answer them directly. Each article opens with a short answer—the kind search engines and AI assistants quote—and is marked up for both.
Before publishing, the SEO Machine runs a check: it blocks any word your business doesn't use, any competitor name, and any number you haven't approved. This keeps the voice yours and the facts safe.
The SEO Machine connects to Google Search Console with one click, so you can see how your content performs in search.

Related questions
Do I need special markup or schema to appear in AI search?
No. According to Google, there are no additional requirements or special schema markup needed to appear in AI Overviews. Write clearly, answer the question directly, and format well—that is enough.
How long does it take for my content to appear in AI search?
This varies by search engine, but if you allow crawlers like OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt, it can be relatively quick. The key is that your content answers the question clearly and your site allows the crawlers to access it.
Can I optimize specifically for AI search differently than for traditional search?
No. The fundamentals are the same: answer questions clearly, use plain language, format with headings and lists, keep facts accurate, and update regularly. Content that works for AI search also works for traditional search engines and for people.
What topics should I write about?
Write about the questions your customers actually ask. Listen to what they ask in email, in person, in support conversations, and on social media. Answer those questions directly on your website, and both traditional search and AI search will find you.
