How can I measure visits and leads from ChatGPT and other AI search tools?

Track visits from ChatGPT and AI search by allowing bot crawlers, monitoring analytics, and attributing leads from AI referrers to understand business impact.

By Brian MacDonald ·

Visits from AI tools like ChatGPT appear in your analytics with their user-agent or IP address. You can identify them by allowing their crawlers in robots.txt and tracking referral sources. Most AI tools don't provide direct conversion data, so you'll need to combine analytics with conversion tracking and lead source attribution in your business systems.

How AI tools find your site

AI assistants like ChatGPT use web crawlers to find and read pages. To appear in their search results and be included in answers they give, your site needs to allow these crawlers and be properly discoverable.

ChatGPT uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. To help it find your site, allow OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file and in requests from OpenAI's published IP ranges. Other AI tools use their own crawlers; check each tool's documentation for requirements.

Other AI assistants like Claude and Google's AI Overviews have different approaches. There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. Standard SEO practices are enough.

Setting up analytics to track AI referrals

The key to measuring visits from AI tools is to distinguish them in your analytics. Most analytics platforms track referral source: where a visitor came from. Visits from AI tools will appear with the tool's crawler name or IP address.

Set up your analytics platform to:

  1. Create segments for known AI crawlers (ChatGPT's OAI-SearchBot, Claude, Perplexity, and others)
  2. Track custom events when someone arrives from an AI referrer and then completes an action (signup, contact form, call, purchase)
  3. Log the referral source whenever someone submits a lead form or contacts you, so you can trace which AI tool sent them
  4. Monitor your site's traffic patterns to spot growth from new AI referrers

Most analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom and others) can do this with custom event tracking or UTM parameters.

Allowing AI crawlers affects your pages

Once you allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, your pages may appear when someone using ChatGPT asks a question your content answers. The change may take about a day to propagate.

When a visitor arrives from ChatGPT, you won't see which specific question was asked; ChatGPT doesn't share that data. Instead, monitor your analytics for visits attributed to the ChatGPT crawler, and look for patterns in:

  • How many visitors come from the crawler vs. how many complete your conversion action
  • Which pages get the most traffic from AI tools (these answer popular questions)
  • How traffic from AI tools compares to other channels
  • Whether visitors from AI tools convert at a different rate

Content that ranks with AI tools

To attract visits from AI tools, your site needs pages that directly answer real questions your customers ask. Unlike traditional search, where ranking depends on links and site authority, AI tools quote from pages that directly answer the question asked.

There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add. Write pages that:

  • Start with a short, clear answer to a specific question (what AI tools quote)
  • Explain the question fully with detail and examples
  • Use plain language
  • Answer the question asked, not a sales pitch

When a customer uses ChatGPT to ask "How do I measure visits from ChatGPT?", the AI will read your page, pull out the key points, and quote your answer. If it's clear and helpful, the visitor may click through to read more or to contact you.

Building this content by hand takes time. One approach is to automate it: Ownbox's SEO Machine writes articles that answer customers' questions and publishes them automatically. Each article opens with a short, direct answer, the kind AI tools quote, and is marked up so search engines and AI assistants can use it. The SEO Machine connects to Google Search Console with one click and tracks which questions your customers ask most often.

Converting visitors to leads

Traffic from AI tools is only valuable if it converts. The standard approach is to connect your analytics to your CRM or lead system, so you can see:

  • How many AI referrals turned into leads
  • Which pages sent converters vs. visitors
  • Breakdown by AI tool (if possible)

Many analytics platforms now support integrations with CRMs and business platforms. If not, you can track it manually: ask every lead which tool they found you in, or include a hidden form field that captures the referrer.

Next step

Attract visits from AI tools by publishing articles that answer customer questions consistently. A shared brain where your AI agents and team do real work together simplifies this at Ownbox.io.

Does ChatGPT tell me which visitors it sent?

No. ChatGPT doesn't share visitor data with websites. You can only see that visits came from OAI-SearchBot (the crawler) and infer that some of those visitors are humans referred by ChatGPT.

Can I pay to rank higher in ChatGPT?

No. AI tools don't have paid rankings. Your pages rank by relevance and quality of content.

What if I block ChatGPT's crawler?

Sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search results, though they can still show up as navigational links. [This happens within about a day of the robots.txt change.](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)

How do I know if AI referrals are profitable?

Track conversions by referral source. If your analytics can't distinguish AI referrers, add a hidden form field in your contact forms or checkout that captures the HTTP referrer. This data helps you see which AI tools send profitable customers.
